OUR tradition

Within Buddhism our tradition is referred to in general as the Mahayana Tradition. Within this, His Holiness The Dalai Lama refers to the Indian lineage of “Nagarjuna and the 17 Nalanda Gurus” as “the most advanced and sophisticated development of Buddhist philosophy” before its transmission to Tibet 1,000 years ago to be practiced by all Tibetan schools up to the present day. “Nalanda” was the first and the greatest Buddhist monastic university of India, in the first millennium of the CE.

All the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism have emerged from this Nalanda tradition. Out of respect for all those traditions and the nonsectarian example of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we members of Jamyang Study Group like to consider ourselves as followers of the non-sectarian Tibetan Buddhist tradition. His Holiness the Dalai Lama advocates and supports a nonsectarian approach towards not only Tibetan Buddhism, but to all Buddhist as well as non-Buddhist traditions.

Grateful and appreciative thanks to the Berzin Archives (www.berzinarchives.com/) for the background information so kindly provided.
